The largest temporary exhibition of our history

The Hungarian Museum of Transport opened the largest temporary exhibition of its history on July 16, 2021. The Once there was the Északi...  the story continues opened in our new home, the Northern Maintenance Depot (Északi) - you can find all information about the exhibition on this site

At the exhibition visitors were able to have a look at the site of our new location at the first time, as well as see our new exhibition on the history of the Északi Járműjavító repair plant as well as its environment, and we also presented the most recent plans of the future New Transport Museum for the public.

The Északi Járműjavító, ceased operation in 2009, used to be the largest railway repair plant of the country. Its Diesel Hall itself is a perfect location for a new exhibition, but it will be augmented by a newly designed contemporary building complex. The world-wide famous Diller Scofidio + Renfro architect office and its Hungarian partner, the M-Teampannon architect office was selected as winners in 2019. The Hungarian government has allocated the neccessary funding in May 2020 for the planning of the new building. You can find more details on the New Transport Museum project here.

The exhibition also hosted six railway vehicles: one iconic nr. 424 steam locomotive, the V60 electric loco from 1932, designed by famous Hungarian engineer, Kálmán Kandó, a nr. 242 steam loco, which holds the speed record of the steam trains in Hungary, at 161 km/h. There are also two M44 diesel shunters, and a Cmn railway carriage. And there is Árpád, the famous rail bus from 1935, which has run between Budapest and Vienna. Most of the vehicles have also been repaired here in Északi.

The Once there was the Északi... exhibition closed on October 31, 2021 due to the cold weather. The exhibition is expected to reopen in the spring of 2022. For more information, follow us on FacebookInstagram, and sign up for our newsletter!
